Wyndham Court and Frobisher House, Southampton

Built 1966-69

Designed by Lyons Israel Ellis

Emerging from Southampton Railway Station you are greeted by this pair of concrete marvels, Frobisher House and Wyndham Court.

Wyndham Court was built on a war-damaged site for professional people. Near white concrete was chosen, rather than bricks (which the council agreed was ‘too suburban’). It houses 184 flats, shops and restaurants (I can recommend Soleto - I had a delicious lunch with my good friend Stefan Powell while we took a break from bimbling around this brutalist masterpeice). It is built on a hill with six storeys on the northern side and seven on the south. It was designed to evoke the cruise ships which set sail from the city’s port and Grade II Listed in 1998 (despite predictable opposition from the local press).

Frobisher House is a recently refurbished office block with cafe chains on the ground floor and some bright, welcoming street art above. I don’t know when it was built or who designed it. If anyone does, please do let me know.
