Golden Lane Estate, London

Built 1952-61

Designed by Chamberlin, Powell & Bon

This was the first project by Chamberlin, Powell & Bon who formed their partnership after winning the City of London’s open competition for this blitzed site.

The estate was designed inwards so that residents didn’t overlook the acres of bombed sites around it. It has a variety of yellow, red and blue buildings separated by open squares and different levels. The yellow clad building was, at 16 storeys, briefly the tallest building in Britain. There are gardens, a swimming pool, tennis courts, shops, playground, the Shakespeare pub and a community centre making it a sought after place to live.

Chamberlin, Powell & Bon went onto design the much larger Barbican estate next door.
