Church of the Good Shepherd, Batheaston
Built 1966-67
Designed by Martin Fisher
This is a rare example of 1960s brutalism in the Bath area. The church was the work of Bath architect Martin Fisher, who was also behind the design of St Peter and Paul’s in Combe Down. It cost £33,000 to build.
The church has been closed since Covid. In 2023 the Diocese of Clifton sought planning permission to demolish it and replace it with housing.
The church is built in concrete which looks grey in the shade and golden in the sun. There are no visible windows from the outside, but inside light shines through multi-coloured translucent panels. I’d love to gain access inside so I can see for myself.
The south-east corner of the roof is triangular and acts as the church’s spire (supposedly reflecting a tent pitched by a travelling pilgrim).
Let’s hope the building can be saved from demolition and be put to good use for the community.
